4 Corners of Spring

As I wade deeper and deeper over my head into the number of unfinished projects on my list (and wait for people to give me their contributions for the June Beast*) here are the 4 songs that have found their way into my heart this spring. I think I repeat them about 6 times a day and when it rains 4 times more.

The 3 playlists these songs are from + A semi-warm rainy day + A good cup of tea + Time to work on my own projects = The closest thing I've found to heaven

Waiting
Norah Jones
The Fall (2009)

Lyrics:

Hush now watch the stars fall
Into a fire wall
I am waiting here
Waiting for you to come home

Sinking embers glow
Melting icy snow
I am waiting here,
Waiting for you to come home

And I watch them burn
When will I ever learn
If I wait it doesn't mean
You will return

(Repeat)

Now all the stars have gone
Faded into cracks of dawn
And I'm still waiting here
Waiting for you to come home
I'm waiting here
Waiting for you to come home

Death Letter
Cassandra Wilson
New Moon Daughter (1995)

Lyrics:
I got a letter this morning
What do you reckon it read?
It said the man you love is dead
I got a letter this morning
What do you reckon it read?

Said "Hurry, Hurry because the man you love is dead"
Well I packed up my suitcase
I took off down the road
When I got there she was layin' on the cooling board
I packed up my suitcase
And I took off down the road
When I got there she was layin' on the cooling board

It looked like ten thousand people standing around the burial ground
I didn't know I loved her 'till they began to let him down
Looked like ten thousand people standing on the burial ground
I didn't know that I loved him 'till they began to let him down

You know it's so hard to love
Someone that don't love you
Won't get satisfaction
Don't care what you do
So hard to love
Someone that don't love you

Don't look like satisfaction
Don't care what you do

Well I got up this morning
The break of day
Just hugging the pillows
She used to lay

Got up this morning
The break of day
Just hugging the pillows
Where my baby used to lay

Oddly enough, heard this song at a dinner party in Brooklyn while waiting for people to come and the party to start. The owner's friend had downloaded their music to iTunes and he hadn't even heard it before.

Big Jet Plane
Angus & Julia Stone
Big Jet Plane (2010)

Lyrics:
She said "Hello mister, pleased to meet ya"
I wanna hold her, I wanna kiss her
She smelled of daisies, she smelled of daisies
She drive me crazy, she drive me crazy

Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Hey hey, hey hey

Be my lover, my lady river
Can I take ya, take ya higher

Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Hey hey, hey hey
Hey hey, hey hey

Gonna hold ya, gonna kiss ya in my arms
Gonna take ya away from harm
Gonna hold ya, gonna kiss ya in my arms
Gonna take ya away from harm

Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Hey hey, hey hey
Hey hey, hey hey
Hey hey

Got this from one of my favorite blogs http://www.changethethought.com/ . I saw it once, fell in love and it has lived in my gchat status for the past 2 weeks: "i love everything about this video but i don't exactly know why". So far a couple of people agree with me.

I'd Rather Go Blind
Etta James
Tell Mama (1969)

Lyrics:
Something told me it was over
When I saw you and her talkin'
Something deep down in my soul said, 'Cry, girl'
When I saw you and that girl walkin' around

Whoo, I would rather, I would rather go blind, boy
Then to see you walk away from me, child, no

Whoo, so you see, I love you so much
That I don't wanna watch you leave me, baby
Most of all, I just don't, I just don't wanna be free, no

Whoo, whoo, I was just, I was just, I was just
Sittin here thinkin', of your kiss and your warm embrace, yeah
When the reflection in the glass that I held to my lips now, baby
Revealed the tears that was on my face, yeah

Whoo and baby, baby, I'd rather, I'd rather be blind, boy
Then to see you walk away, see you walk away from me, yeah
Whoo, baby, baby, baby, I'd rather be blind...

This song was the only thing I liked about Beyonce in the entire 109 min of  Cadillac Records. Beyonce is a dope entertainer but one of the worst actresses I've ever seen. Her scene with this song almost made me change my mind... until I heard the original by Etta James... and then I shook my head . Cadillac Records, despite the painful Beyonce butchering Etta Jame's legacy moments, is quickly becoming one of my favorite movies and I thank the directors for reconnecting with my long lost "Down Home Blues" roots.
